About This Compound
Melanotan 1 (afamelanotide) is a linear synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) consisting of 13 amino acids. Unlike MT-2, it is a full agonist at the MC1 receptor with high receptor selectivity, making it the subject of focused melanogenesis research.
Melanotan 1 binds to the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes, stimulating the production of eumelanin — the photoprotective brown-black pigment. This receptor activation also upregulates DNA repair mechanisms in UV-exposed cells, independent of pigmentation.
